  • Patterns or trends

HQ, I can see you have done an enormous amount of work to your outstanding SEO Hero HQ website for the Wix SEO Hero $50,000 Challenge. I would like to ask a question--"have you noticed any new patterns or trends in seo tactics or strategies implemented during the contest these past two months? Any Surprises?

On December 18, 2016 you stated what you believe are the obvious and accepted Google ranking algorithm factors, such as: click through rate, page speed, content/keywords, and natural links. Any others you would like to mention? Do you see new factors now that we are beyond the half-way mark emerging in the contest from tactics or strategies you've seen employed by other contestants?

    HeroSauce,

The most frequent patterns observed from the WIX "SEO" contest are the spamming of social network fan pages & various profile pages, and thousands of one-liner backlinks with "zero substance" (backlinks created for the sole purpose of creating a link without offering contents of substance). Lately, we've had some good laughs at our server logs-the report that diagrams our entire website's activity. On HQ's Forums alone, there have been dozens of attempts by contestants to drop links to their site. Backlinks embedded with rich content from the top SEOs in the World you ask? No, one-liners with their best efforts going toward backlinks that include the anchor "SEO Hero."

Just like any real and respectable human edited forum, HQ honors content that adds to the overall value of our community. SEO Hero challengers (& anyone else) attempting to include a backlink to their hero/web site on HQ's forums without a natural and substinent reason for including said backlink, probably won't get very far. Just two months into the contest and HQ has spent hundreds of hours creating unique digital content with rich substance for you―when creating links within our content back to your hero/web site, include some substance and value with your backlinks!

Fan/Profile page spamming: Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest etc, are spectacular for networking and improving a brand presence, but these authoritative networks also allow unlimited "self-created" pages. Now imagine there being thousands of fortune 500 corporations battling over the same brand name (keyword). With the incredible domain authority these social networks possess, it is extremely common to have a combination of these networks showing up in search results for most keyword search terms. The Internet was a much more enjoyable place for SEOs before MySpaces started popping up everywhere. Evermore, the "popular names" spam has been endless ever since.

The SEO Hero School for Gifted Optimizer's search presence is a great example of this brand jacking phenomenon... The Facebook fan page created by "Terry Kyle," facebook.com/seoheroschool, appears in Google's page one results for "SEO Hero School." Terry Kyle seems to have got the jump on Fishkin's SEO Hero School's own FB page creation and appears one rank ahead of the school's actual "SEO Hero School" brand Facebook fan page. Unfortunately, this phenomenon can be easily replicated to infinity. The majority of these social networks provide zero dofollow links (with exceptions, but typically requires technical SEO tactics). This means that in a way, when misused, these authoritative social networks serve as nothing less than f*$#ed-up-solutions for desperate and less qualified seos to hijack the actual brands search presence.

Mentioned Google ranking algorithm factors explained:
    • Click through rate (CTR) - Probably one of the least factored (if at all) Google ranking factors. However, an extremely low CTR may indicate to the search engine that the intended audience has issues with the website's content. This sends a message to the search engine that other search results may be more accurate. A low CTR combined with "thin content" is a ranking death sentence for any domain.
    • Page Speed - Top 5 algorithm ranking factor. Several WIX SEO Hero contest domains (including HQ's) have been plagued with a mysterious phenomenon/hack that has lowered our page speed scores considerably since the origination of the SEO challenge. HQ's page speed score has decreased by over 10%.
    • Website content - Top 3 Google algorithm ranking factor. Spiders love spending time crawling elaborately connected & immensely rich digital web content
    • Natural backlinks primarily from related sites - #1 ranking factor. Trumps website content because you can rank a picture of a banana #1 for any search term or phrase with strong enough backlinks pointed at it. However, if the banana picture website has a low CTR for the search term or phrase, the correlating backlinks may be assigned a decreased value on the algorithms overall website audit.
    • Keywords in URL, meta description, correlating header tags/site contents - Top 3 Google algorithm ranking factor. Obviously, the webpage should be about what is being searched.
